Technology has helped many aspects of human life. From daily activities such as cooking to complex jobs in industry. Another impact of the technological development is on the job creation and destruction rate. For example, after the existence of computers, the typist profession was eliminated. Moreover, after the existence of YouTube, YouTuber is a new type of legitimate job. Both of these are proof that technology doesn’t just eliminate old jobs that are no longer relevant. But it also helps the creation of job roles in line with the development of technology itself.
Theoretically, the job creation rate will exceed the rate of job destruction. However, in 2020 job destruction is accelerating because of pandemic we are facing. Meanwhile, job creation rate is slowing. Above all, the industry is more focused on automating existing jobs.
The number of job roles created and destructed
It is predicted that in 2025 jobs that are no longer relevant will disappear by 6.4% from the previous 15.4% to 9%. Meanwhile, the growth rate for emerging new jobs will increase by 5.7%, from 7.8% to 13.5%. This percentage is the figure of the total employees of the respondent’s companies and organizations. The conclusion based on these figures is that by 2025, 85 million jobs will disappear as the division of job tasks from man to machine shifts. Even so, 97 new jobs will emerge. The emerging job roles will adapt better to the roles and divisions between humans, machines and algorithms. These figures are based on data provided by the World Economic Forum in ‘The Future of Jobs Report 2020’. The data is obtained from a survey conducted in 26 countries around the world.
Therefore, if you want to remain relevant in this era. It would be great to always adopt new skills and develop them. The development of technology should also trigger us to continue to develop so that we are not inferior to technology itself. Living in an era with a high rate of new technological growth should not threaten us, but provide new opportunities.
