Instagram boss Adam Mosseri issued a shocking statement. He mentioned Bytedance’s short video application TikTok as a competitor to Instagram.
“TikTok is a very tough competitor, maybe the toughest competitor we’ve ever seen. They are very focused, they are determined, and execute it well,” said Adam Mosseri as quoting from CNBC International, Friday (11/12/2020).
“TikTok is a company that cloned Musical.ly app. Then grew so fast that they could actually afford the service they cloned. Moreover, it wants content or a short video format that entertains it, they deserve a lot of credit for it. ”
Instagram Makes a New Feature: Reels
Adam Mosseri added to catch up with TikTok, Instagram is making a series of new features. One of them is Reels which is similar to TikTok and combines it with shopping features.
Now businesses and creators can tag products when they create Reels videos. Then, consumers can tap “view products” to buy them immediately or set aside for later purchases.
“This is us trying to catch up in many ways. By building a feature set for creators to inspire them to use our platform more. Because without compelling content there is no reason to go to Reels,” he explained.
Adam Mosseri also revealed that TikTok’s success shows that the Facebook Group is not a monopoly and anti-competitive. It was as alleged by the Federal Communication Trade Commission and the 48 state attorneys general of the United States (US).
“In my opinion, the key is understanding what problem you are trying to solve and what the consequences are. The consequences (forcing Facebook to sell Instagram), I think will be very, very significant for the people who use and rely on Instagram,” said Mosseri.
Just so you know, Instagram was launched in 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Then Facebook bought it in 2012 for US$1 billion.
Meanwhile, TikTok was launched in 2016 and this short video application quickly developed into one of the most popular applications among young people. Even TikTok’s success is considered by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg as a threat to the Facebook Group.
