Kaspersky’s predictions of Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) for 2021 show how targeted cyberattack methods will change in the coming months. We gonna talk more about cyber threats in 2021.

The turmoil in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic will bring many structural and strategic changes. Changes not only in daily life but also in the realm of targeted attacks.

The number of attacks did not decrease as the attack surface expanded. New attack vectors, such as targeting network equipment and exploring for 5G vulnerabilities, will coincide with multi-stage attacks.

Other cyber threats in 2021 include:

  1. Use Legal Tracks to Overcome Cybersecurity

Kaspersky’s previous predictions of ‘naming and shaming’ APT attacks have been proven, and more organizations will follow suit in the future.

Exposing the tools that APT groups use at the government level will encourage more countries to do the same.

  1. Silicon Valley Companies Against Zero-Day Brokers

There are many cases where zero-day vulnerabilities in popular applications are exploited to carry out espionage on a variety of different targets.

Kaspersky predicts that more Silicon Valley companies will fight zero-day hackers to protect security systems.

Zero-day is a security flaw in software. There is no patch or patch to fix the vulnerability because it appears when a new version is released.

Usually there is no patch / patch to fix because hackers are able to immediately look for loopholes in the new version before the developer can create a patch.

  1. Increased targeting of network equipment.

Organizational security has become a priority following the implementation of remote work or WFH. Kaspersky predicts that there will be more indications for exploiting network equipment such as VPN gateways.

Collecting credentials to access a corporate VPN through employees working remotely is also a potential occurrence.

  1. Demanding money with threats

Extortion will become more prevalent in 2021 so that hackers can buy the latest attack tools.

When a certain amount of money is raised through extortion, the perpetrators will invest large sums of money into the latest state-of-the-art equipment at a budget comparable to the state-sponsored APT group.

  1. More destructive attacks

Many destructive attacks occur as a result of targeted attacks designed to affect critical infrastructure or additional damage.

Kaspersky said human life is increasingly dependent on technology so that the attack surface is wider than before.

  1. The emergence of 5G vulnerabilities

The network is one of the targets that criminals will target to look for vulnerabilities they can exploit. This network is targeted because many devices become dependent on connectivity.

7.  Exploit the Covid-19 pandemic

Although it does not encourage changes in the tactics, techniques, and procedures of the threat actors, in fact the virus has become a mode of attack.

As the pandemic is likely to continue into 2021, threat actors will not stop exploiting the topic of the pandemic as the start of an attack.
